POSITION PURPOSE: Under the direction of the National Director, News & Broadcast, Southern California, the Director, News & Broadcast will represent the interests of SAG-AFTRA and its members through negotiation and enforcement of News and Broadcast collective bargaining agreements and supervise and administer staff responsible for SAG-AFTRA’s News & Broadcast jurisdiction in Southern California.  This position may also assist with News & Broadcast representation in other regions as necessary.  

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Work under the direction of the National Director, N&B Southern California, handling and/or supervising staff assigned to news and broadcast matters arising out of Los Angeles and San Diego CBAs, including station visits and shop meetings, contract enforcement, disciplinary matters, internal and external organizing, membership matters and news & broadcast programming in the Local.
  • Serve as lead, second chair and/or supervise local staff engaged in collective bargaining with News & Broadcast employers in Los Angeles and San Diego.
  • Work to cultivate member leadership, develop and provide leadership training and other programming for member leaders, including work with the local and national Broadcast Steering Committees.
  • Provide consultation and/or supervise staff providing consultation related to personal service contracts.
  • Cultivate and maintain strong relationships with various stakeholders; e.g., members and staff, member representatives, station management, producers, unions and industry associations and organizations. 
  • Work in alignment with national strategy and serve as lead for the Local on all broadcast member issues such as minimum contractual standards, coordinating bargaining, contract and employer campaigns and organizing in conjunction with all national and local staff working in news and broadcast, as directed.
  • Initiate and develop programming for members working in news and broadcast, as directed.
  • Supervise and develop Broadcast Manager & Labor Counsel and Broadcast Business Representatives, and other support staff as assigned.
  • Responsible for assisting and / or coordinating with National Director, N&B, Southern California, Chief Broadcast Officer and Chief DGC with respect to all representational and associated legal work before the NLRB, other government agencies, and state and federal court.
  • Responsible for assisting and / or coordinating with National Director, N&B, Southern California, Chief Broadcast Officer and Chief DGC with respect to the handling of arbitration matters (both simple and complex), concerning News & Broadcast-related grievances.
  • Represent SAG-AFTRA as directed in collective bargaining and/or dispute resolution with internal staff unions.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
  • May be assigned to perform the above duties for other regions.

 

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES:

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Education and/or Experience:

  • Juris Doctor or Advanced degree in Labor Relations preferred.
  • For California candidates: If barred in another state, registered in-house Counsel is required.
  • Entertainment industry union experience a plus.
  • 5-7 years’ experience in collective bargaining, contract enforcement and internal / external organizing.
  • Minimum 2-3 years’ supervisory experience.

Certificates, licenses, and/or registrations:

  • Must have a current driver's license, automobile (in reliable working condition), and current automobile insurance that meets the state minimum requirements.
